Football first Tottenham took Arsenal into extra time, but two penalties from Samir Nasri and a strike from Andrei Arshavin gave the visitors a 4-1 win and a place in the Carling Cup fourth round.
Elsewhere, Everton and Bolton both suffered humbling evenings – Everton were taken into extra time by League 1 side Brentford and lost 4-3 on penalties; Burnley beat Bolton 1-0; Stoke City beat Fulham 2-0; and Sunderland were beaten 2-1 at the Stadium of Light by West Ham United.
More Carling Cup third-round action tonight as Aston Villa take on Blackburn Rovers; Chelsea play Newcastle United; current holders Manchester United play away at Scunthorpe United; Liverpool play against Northampton Town; and West Bromwich Albion will host Manchester City.

Back home in the S-League – Home United leaped to the top of the standings with a well-deserved 3-0 win at Tampines Rovers last night.
The Rovers who lead the table for most of the season now find themselves in third place and will be hoping Etoile FC slip up tonight.
The French-outfit will play Gombak United later this evening in another crucial tie from 7:30pm and a win for Etoile will get back on top of the league.

Finally in Formula One – with days away from the Singapore Grand Prix – Fernando Alonso is confident Ferrari can take the fight to Red Bull over the course of the next two races.
Red Bull has been well suited to tight and twisty circuits this year, excelling in Monaco and Hungary, and is expected to be the class of the field in both Singapore and Japan.
Sebastian Vettel and Mark Webber head into this weekend's race as the favourites to win but Alonso believes a significant upgrade to the floor of the Ferrari should mean it is quick no matter what the circuit characteristics.
Singapore practices begin Friday from 6pm at the Marina Bay Street Circuit.
