Football first and in the English FA Cup Third Round – Manchester United defeated Liverpool 1-0 at Old Trafford to advance into the next round.
A Ryan Giggs penalty 2 minutes right after the kick-off prove to be the decisive goal against Kenny Dalglish’s-side who also lost Steven Gerrard after being sent off for a two-footed lunge on Michael Carrick.
United will play Southampton away in the next stage.
In other schedule fourth-round ties – Everton will host Chelsea, who thrashed Ipswich Town 7-0 last night; Bolton Wanderer’s will play against Wigan; Fulham face Tottenham and Aston Villa will host Blackburn Rovers.
All fourth-round ties will be played on the weekend of the 29th and 30th of January.

In Football right across Europe – Serie A leaders AC Milan faught back from 3-1 down to level their tie 4-4 against Udinese; Inter Milan continued their winning ways with a 2-1 win at Catania.
In the Spanish La-Liga – Cristiano Ronaldo grabbed a hat-trick as Real Madrid defeated Villarreal 4-2 at the Bernabau; Mallorca hammered Almeria 4-1; and Espanyol cruised to a 4-0 win over lowly Real Zaragoza.

In the AFC Asian Cup – in Group B – Japan’s Maya Yoshida rescued his side from defeat with a last minute equalizer against Jordan drawing 1-all;
and in another Group B tie – Saudi Arabia was stunned by Syria 2-1 in their opening game.

Finally in Asean Basketball League – The highly-motivated Singapore Slingers cruised to a 102 – 61 victory over the Brunei Barracudas yesterday at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.
The Slingers now remain in the driving seat of determining the final playoffs berth.
Singapore will now need to beat table toppers the Chang Thailand Slammers to further secure their chance in their final regular season game which will be played in Bangkok this Saturday.
