Football first and in the English Carling Cup – West Ham take a slender 2-1 advantage into their second-leg tie against Birmingham City in two weeks time.
Substitute Carlton Cole scored what proved to be the winner 12-minutes from time, after goalkeeper Ben Foster was badly at fault letting in a weak shot from Birmingham’s David Murphy.

In tonight’s other semi-final tie – Arsenal host Ipswich Town at The Emirates on a day when Nicklaus Bendtner has challenged the Gunner’s to win the Carling Cup and use it as a springboard to Premier League title glory.

Next in the AFC Asian Cup held in Qatar – Iran came from a goal down to beat holders Iraq 2-1 in a thrilling Group D encounter.

Earlier North Korea and the United Arab Emirates drew goalless in their opening Group D tie.

More AFC Asian Cup action this evening as Group A resumes with Uzbekistan taking on Kuwait from 9:15pm; the Kuwaitis are in need of a win to have another chance of making it into the next stage.

And so too are hosts Qatar who seek their first points in the tournament when they host group leaders China; that tie will kick-off just after mid-night.

Finally in Tennis – Andy Murray hopes to play an exhibition match against Marin Cilic at the Kooyong Classic in Melbourne tomorrow.

Six of the world's top 15 will head to the Kooyong Lawn Tennis Club in Melbourne to continue the build-up to next week's Australian Open.
