Football and in English Premiership Chelsea leapt back to the top of the table ahead of Champions Manchester United with a 7-nil demolition of Stoke City.


A hat-trick from Ivorian striker Salomon Kalou, a brace from Frank Lampard, including a penalty, and late goals from substitute Daniel Sturridge and Florent Malouda maintained the Blue’s dream of winning a League and FA Cup double this season.

In other ties – Burnley were sent back down to the Championship when they were handed a 4-nil thrashing at home by Liverpool; Steven Gerrard scored a brace.

Elsewhere Everton left it late to beat Fulham 2-1 at Goodison Park; and Aston Villa kept their Champions League aspirations alive with a 1-nil win over Birminghamn City.

Off the Pitch news – and Manchester United striker Wayne Rooney has been named the Professional Footballers' Association Player of the Year.

Rooney however missed out an awards double as James Milner beat him to the PFA Young Player of the Year prize.

In the rest of European Football action – in Spain – a last-gasp Daniel Parejo penalty saw Sevilla's chances of Champions League football suffer a blow with a costly defeat at Getafe.

The home-side came from behind twice in a seven-goal thriller winning the tie 4-3.

In other ties in La Liga – Mallorca could only afford a draw against 10-men Malaga; and Atletico Madrid defeated Tenerife 3-1 at home.

And over in Italy’s Serie A – Sampdoria striker Giampaolo Pazzini scored twice to stun Roma and prevent them from moving back to the top of Serie A.

Roma captain Francesco Totti opened the scoring in the 14th minute before Pazzini's double ensured that Inter remain top with three games left.
