Serving-up with Tennis first and in the French Open – Spain’s Rafael Nadal is through to the semis with a straight sets win over fellow-countryman Nicolas Almargo.


Nadal defeated his opponent 7-6, 7-6, 6-4 and have set up a meeting with 22nd-seed Jurgen Melzer.

Melzer faught back from two sets down against number 3 seed Novak Djokovic to win 3-6, 2-6, 6-2, 7-6, 6-4.

In Ladies quarter-final action – Serena Williams bowed out fo the competiton when Australia’s Sam Stosur managed to overcome the number 1 seed in a 3-set thriller.

Stosur saw off the American 2-6, 7-6, 8-6 to clinch a semi-final berth with Serbia’s Jelena Jankovic.

Football next and in World Cup warm-ups and International Friendlies – Brazil scored a 3-nil win over Zimbawe.

The win however caused an injury scare for the Brazilian goalkeeper Julio Ceasar as he was substituted after just 20-minutes.

Dunga’s Brazil play Tanzania in Dar-es-Salaam on Sunday before beginning their World Cup Group G campaign against North Korea on June 15.

In other overnight ties – Paraguay sealed a 2-nil win over Greece; Hondurus were held to a goalless draw by lowly Azerbaijan; so too did Poland drawing nil-nil against Serbia; and The Ukraine scored in the final minute of play to beat Norway 1-nil.

Finally back home in the S-League – Frederic Mendy’s 74th minute strike at the Jalan Besar Stadium last night saw Etoile FC defeat Home United 1-nil.

In a game filled with yellow-cards, the French-outfit’s victory takes them to just a point away from leaders Tampines Rovers.

And tonight the Rovers are in action as they play away at the Jalan Besar Stadium against the Young Lions.

Elsewhere – Albirex Niigata take on Balestier Khlasa at the Jurong East Stadium; both ties will kick-off at 7:30pm.
