SPORTS 100705

With just a day left to the first Semi-finals of the FIFA World Cup – between Uruguay and the Netherlands – Dutch coach Bert van Warwijk has invoked the painful memories of Euro 2008.

The 58-year old will instill in his side that they must avoid complacency as they prepare to face Uruguay in tomorrow’s tie in Green Point Stadium in Cape Town.

Elsewhere – with Holland elliminating Brazil last week in the Quarters – The Brazilian Football Federation has confirmed that coach Dunga has been dismissed.

Dunga signed a four-year deal in 2006 and led Brazil to success in the 2007 Copa America as well as last year's Confederations Cup.

Former AC Milan boss Leonardo is believed to be the main contender to replace Dunga.

Swinging over to Tennis now and in the Men’s Finals in Wimbledon – Rafael Nadal cemented his status as the best player in the world with a 6-3 7-5 6-4 demolition of Tomas Berdych.

The Spaniard took just two hours and 13 minutes to win his eighth grand slam title, securing back-to-back major victories in Paris and London for the second time.

And finally back to football and a quick check in the S-League – in last night’s only tie – Tampines Rovers lost ground with leaders Etoile FC with a disappointing nil-nil draw at Geylang United.

Playing at the Bedok Stadium – The Rovers’ goalless draw has put them 5 points adrift of the lead.

And it may become worse for Tampines – as Home United play against Gombak United tonight at the Clementi Stadium.

A win for Home and they will leap-frog Tampines into second-spot.

That tie will kick-off at 7:30pm.
