Football first and in the English Premiership – a goal from substitute Michael Owen just three minutes after coming on ensured Manchester United avoid the same fate as Arsenal and Chelsea this weekend as they drew 2-2 at Bolton.
In Sunday’s two other ties Aston Villa beat Wolves 2-1 at Molineux and Stoke City won 2-1 at Newcastle.
Elsewhere in Europe – in Spain’s La Liga David Trezeguet struck twice as Hercules continued their giant-killing act this time beating Sevilla 2-0.
Atletico Madrid crept up to fourth in the league with a hard-earned 1-0 win over Real Zaragoza; and there were also wins for Real Mallorca, Getafe, Almeria and Espanyol who overcame Osasuna 1-0.
And in the Serie A – Summer signing Milos Krasic scored a hat-trick to give Juventus a 4-2 victory over Cagliari; and elsewhere, Mauro Zarate fired Lazio to a 1-0 win over Chievo, a result that sees them go joint top with Inter Milan.

Finally in Formula One – Fernando Alonso completed an impressive start-to-finish victory at the Singapore Grand Prix, his second win in as many races.
Alonso’s win for Ferrari reduces Mark Webber's lead at the top of the drivers' championship to 11 points with four grands prix remaining.
Sebastian Vettel who finished only 0.2 seconds behind Alonso after a late yellow flag, took second from Webber, with Jenson Button in fourth.
Lewis Hamilton's title ambitions however suffered a major setback when he collided with Mark Webber on the 35th lap and was forced to retire.
McLaren’s team principal Martin Whitmarsh defended Hamilton's move on Webber and even hinted that the Red Bull driver was to blame.
