Football and FIFA have announced that Russia will host the 2018 World Cup; and Qatar will host the World Cup in 2022.


Both countries will make their debuts as World Cup hosts after FIFA's 22-member panel voted to award the nations the right to host.

FIFA president Sepp Blatter announced the eagerly anticipated results in Zurich, just before mid-night last night.

Back on the pitch and in the Europa League Match-day 5 results – in Group K –Liverpool’s fringe players helped secure the club's place in the last 32 of the competition thanks to a 1-1 draw with Steaua Bucharest in Romania.

Staying in Liverpool’s group – FC Utrecht and Napoli left themselves with difficult tasks to progress after restricting each other to a point apiece with a 3-3 draw.

Elsewhere – Bundesliga leaders Borussia Dortmund remain alive in the fight to qualify from Group J after a comfortable 3-0 victory over Karpaty Lviv; and Paris St Germain secured their progress after beating Group J leaders Sevilla 4-2 in a thrilling encounter at the Parc des Princes.

Finally in the AFF Suzuki Cup – it was another night of shocking results as 3-time winners Singapore were held to a 1-all draw by lowly Philippines.

After a scoreless first-half Aleksander Duric opened the accounts for the Lions in the 64th minute – but a Chris Greatwich strike in injury time gave the Philippines a famous point over Singapore.

In the night’s other game at the My Dinh Stadium – co-hosts and current holders Vietnam demolished Myanmar 7-1 in their opening group B tie.

Vietnam will take on the Philippines next and Singapore will face Myanmar this Sunday.
