Football – Real Madrid have sacked manager Manuel Pellegrini, paving the way for Jose Mourinho to take charge at the club.


Real president Florentino Perez said in a press conference just hours ago that the club needed a change and were very happy that Jose will be the man to take over the reins.

Mourinho however is not expected to be in Spain anytime soon, but will be away on holidays first.

Elsewhere – Cesc Fabregas has placed his future in the hands of Arsene Wenger and says he will not let his possible transfer to Barcelona distract him from his World Cup campaign with Spain.

On the pitch and in International Friendlies played overnight – Holland have managed a 2-1 win over Mexico with Robin Van Persie scoring a brace.

The Dutch are grouped with Japan, Cameroon and Denmark in the World Cup and will play their European counterparts in their opening Group E fixture on June 14th.

Elsewhere – 1998 World Cup winners France escaped with a 2-1 win against Costa Rica; Turkey managed a 2-nil victory over the Northern Ireland; Chile scored a 3-nil win over Zambia; and Uruguay defeated Israel 4-1 at home.

Back home in the RHB Singapore Cup – South Melbourne have beaten Gombak United 2-1 to advance into the last eight.

The Australian side will next play either Thailand’s Bangkok Glass or the S-League’s SAFFC.

Finally in Tennis and in the French Open second round action - defending champion and top seed Roger Federer overcame a spirited Colombian Alejandro Falla in straight sets 7-6, 6-2, 6-4 to advance.

In other men’s matches yesterday - No.10 seed Marin Cilic ousted Spaniard Daniel Gimeno-Traver 6-3, 7-6, 6-2; while French No.1 Jo-Wilfried Tsonga annihilated friend and countryman Josselin Ouanna 6-love, 6-1, 6-4 in one hour, 19 minutes.
