Kicking off with Football and results of the Europa League Group stage – Matchday 1 and in Group K – a much changed Liverpool side managed a 4-1 home win against Romania’s Steaua Bucuresti.

An early goal from Joe Cole, a second-half strike from Lucas and a brace from David N’Gog help the Reds to all three-points, despite Christian Tanase scoring an equaliser in the first 45 for the Romanian side.

Elsewhere Manchester City started their campaign with a 2-0 win away at Salzburg of Austria; holders Atletico Madrid were beaten by Greek-side Aris Salonika 1-0 away; Germany’s Bayer Leverkusen hammered Norway’s Rosenborg 4-0 at home; and in Italy Juventus were held to a 3-all draw against Polish-side Lech Poznan at the Stadio Olimpico.

Aleksandar Duric netted twice in a tie that saw the Rovers run-out 4-2 winners on the night.

However the Rovers’ lead could be overtaken when Etoile FC plays tonight and victory over Balestier Khalsa will take them ahead of Tampines on 61 points.

Now that exciting tie will kick-off at 7:30pm at the Queenstown Stadium.
