SPORTS 101004

We kick-off with Football and in the English Premiership – Liverpool were beaten 2-1 at home by Blackpool.
The shocking result – leaves Liverpool in the relegation zone and manager Roy Hodgson insists his side are not in a relegation battle.

Elsewhere Chelsea’s Didier Drogba and Alex earned the Blues all three points and remaind at the top by defeating their London rivals Arsenal 2-0; and Manchester City climbed to second with a hard-earned 2-1 win over Newcastle United.

In the La-Liga Real Madrid saw off Deportivo La Coruna 6-1 to leap-frog Barcelona into thrid place; the Catalans on the other hand were held to a 1-all draw by Mallorca.

In the Italian Serie A – Inter Milan dropped points as they were held to a goalless draw by Juventus;

and with Inter sharing the points, it meant Lazio top the league wth their crucial 1-0 win over Brescia; and in the bottom-half of the table AS Roma’s woes continued as they were beaten 2-0 at Napoli.

Next Basketball – and the Singapore Slingers got their second ASEAN Basketball League season to a flying start as they narrowly beat Satria Muda BritAma 94-93 at the Singapore Indoor Stadium.

In a pulsating rematch of last year’s semi-final play-off, the Slingers’ Leo Avenido led with 20 points and shot 63% from beyond the arc, while Kyle Jeffers added 19 points and 11 rebounds.

In another tie yesterday – current holders – Philippines Patriots slammed past the Brunei Barracudas 71-62 at the Ynares Sports Arena in Manila.

The Patriots will next play the Singapore Slingers in the Philippines this Saturday.

Finally in Golf – Europe have taken a remarkable three-point lead into today’s singles at the Ryder Cup after a stunning turn-around.

From 6-4 down overnight Colin Montgomerie will go into the fourth day - needed for the first time in the event's history because of yet another rain delay - with a 9 1/2-6 1/2 lead over the stunned Americans.
