Football first and Liverpool needed an 86th minute strike from Maxi Rodriguez to give them a 1-0 win over Bolton at the Reebok Stadium.
In earlier games in the Premiership last night – Aston Villa and Birmingham City played out to a goalless draw at Villa Park; and Newcastle hammered Sunderland 5-1 with captain Kevin Nolan bagging a hat-trick.

In and around Europe – in the La Liga – Atletico Madrid were held to a 1-all draw by Almeria; Villarreal rescued a point away at Sporting Gijon by drawing 1-all as well; and Athletico Bilbao defeated Getafe 3-0 to climb to 8th in the league.
In the Serie A – Lazio widened the gap at the top with a 1-0 away win at Palermo; and Napoli continued their fine start to the season also with a 1-0 win away at Brescia.

In Golf – A birdie at the last hole saw Amercian Ben Crane hold off England’s Brian Davies to win the CIMB Asia Pacific Classic by one stroke.
Crane held his nerve at The Mines Resort and Golf Club in Kuala Lumpur and signed for a two-under 69 to finish 18 under par and edge out Davies and collect a prize of US$1 million dollars.
Singapore’s Madan Mamat finished joint 5th at 14-under to become the top Asian at the tounament.

Finally in Basketball – back home in the Asean Basketball League – Leonidez Avenido was on fire and powered The Singapore Slingers to earn another victory at home over the Chang Thailand Slammers 87 – 81.
With the win the Slingers now leap-frog the Slammers into second spot in the league – at 6 points and with a better shooting percentage.
The Slingers play Indonesia’s Satria Muda next this Saturday at the Britama Arena in Jakarta.
