Football first and in the night’s only Premiership tie – Liverpool overcame a lacklusture Aston Villa 3-0 at Anfield.

Goals from David N’gog, Ryan Babel and Maxi Rodriguez gave the Reds a win that fired them up 4 spots to 8th place on the table.

Fernando Torres was not present at the game as he was at the birth of his second child.

Off the pitch – and Newcastle United have sensationally sacked manager Chris Hughton just over a year after he was appointed the club's boss on a permanent basis.

A statement issued by the club said that the board felt that an individual with more managerial experience was needed to take the club forward.

Former Tottenham manager Martin Jol is being tipped as a replacement after resigning from his post at Ajax on Monday night.

Elsewhere in Europe – in the Spanish La Liga – Deportivo La Coruna managed a 1-0 victory over Hercules to move ahead of their opponents on the table;

and in the Italian Serie-A – Napoli defeated Palermo 1-0.

Closer to home – later this evening all eyes will be on Group A in the AFF Suzuki Cup – where already qualified Indonesia will play Thailand in their final group match.

The Thais come into this game in must-win situation having drawn their opening two group ties.

Now a win against the host will see Thailand progress at the expense of Malaysia who take on Laos in the other group game.

Both matches will kick-off simultaneously at 8:30pm.

Finally in Formula One – Mark Webber has revealed he fractured a shoulder when he was within sight of clinching this year's Formula One world title.

Webber sustained the injury with four grands prix remaining, at that stage holding an 11-point lead over Fernando Alonso, while he was 21 clear of Red Bull team-mate and eventual champion Sebastian Vettel.
